CAN YOU SKYDIVE DURING THE WINTER?
We get a few phone calls each winter from adventurous customers interested in skydiving among the snowflakes. Some common questions we are asked are: Is it possible to jump during the winter? Can you skydive when it’s cold outside? Can you go skydiving when it’s snowing? Here are all the details on winter skydiving.
IS SKYDIVE MIDWEST OPEN DURING THE WINTER?
While we are not open for tandem skydiving operations, we are still available to take reservations and sell gift certificates for the coming season. Skydive Midwest has customer service agents available from 9-5, Monday through Friday during our off-season (November-March). Winter is one of the BEST times to purchase a tandem skydive as the prices are at their very lowest. DOES THE COLD OR SNOW PROHIBIT SKYDIVING IN WINTER?
Skydive Midwest does not conduct tandem operations during the winter month simply because there is not enough interest to operate efficiently and not enough work to keep the instructors busy. Most instructors travel South for the winter to find more work. Weather tends to be cloudy or windy, which limits the number of jumpable days and makes it difficult to service our customers in a timely manner. However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to jump in the winter. Occasionally, we will allow our licensed jumper community to conduct winter skydives on a limited schedule.
SKYDIVING IN THE COLD – Temperatures tend to drop as you go up in altitude, which makes for some pretty chilly skydiving. Dressing in warm layers, wearing full-faced helmets, gloves, and utilizing heated vests or hand warmers are common ways jumpers mitigate discomfort from the cold. If dressed appropriately, it is possible to skydive in extreme cold.
SKYDIVING IN THE SNOW- Snow on the ground isn’t a big problem when it comes to skydiving. Though, it’s important to note, deep snow on the ground can alter your depth perception. If it’s actively snowing, there is a good chance we won’t be able to jump due to a low, solid cloud base. We must maintain clearance from clouds to skydive safely.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO SKYDIVE?
Winter can be cold, cloudy, and windy; making it uncomfortable or difficult to skydive. Our skydiving season generally runs from April until early November to capitalize on the best weather for skydiving. Though we don’t offer tandem skydiving during the winter months, the off-season is an EXCELLENT time to purchase a gift certificate.
